Group Planning A3

This was in the early stages of deciding what we wanted form a music video. We put all of our ideas on an A3 piece of paper and brain stormed what we would like to do. This helped because we could put all our ideas out in the open and chose the one we all think that will be the best for all of us.

Evaluation

     1)    In what ways does your music product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The aim of my production, was to create a music video, for a genre of my choice. A music video is a video made with a song by an artist to promote there single or album making them more popular, this will also give more information on the artist and it can also give an insight on what the song is about. This also creates an image which the record company like to control so they can get more sales making more money for the company and making the artist more popular hopefully selling more concert tickets and merchandise, this can also lead to getting advertisement deals with companies e.g. Ellie Goulding advertises nike. A memorable type is Eminem’s ‘Love the Way You Lie’ This music video made more money then expected and also had over 160 million times. A music video can be split into 3 different areas, which this video is aimed at narrative from the storyline with 2 famous actors and performance, which is done by Rihanna and Eminem them singing/rapping but also the visual affects the third type, is concept this is not used much in this video but the use of a bad relationship is within there they also have used visual affects like burning down of the house and the fire within Megan Fox's hands. I made a music video and a digipak for an album, which included the album cover; we also made a advertisement for a magazine to help my artist to be known which we have tried to sell her to a wider audience. Within this project I worked with Jordan Allured.  As a group we chose to do a dance video but with an indie artist theme so that the video could be more interesting to the audience, the song we chose was Ellie Goulding's 'You My Everything' but the remix used for the channel 4 teen drama skins final episode, this was because we saw the video made more Lana Del Rey's 'Summertime Sadness' Remix which I thought that it was very affective selling the artist but also keeping a wide rang of the audience interested.

I started this project by looking at other artist and music videos so I could see what type of music video I would like to make. From this I made a questionnaire, which would ask the audience what they would like to see within the video, and what type of artist they would want. From this I found that they didn’t want to see loads of dancing throughout and wanted to have a strong storyline with good visuals meaning that they would be kept interested, this is unconventional for a dance video because they are normally created so that the artist is dancing with people without a storyline, visuals are used more within indie music videos this means we could go with our original idea. A dance video without much of a storyline is Flo Riders ‘The Club Can’t Handle Us’ the only meaning full bit of the video is that there is too many people coming to party the will use the street, everything else is people in a club or dancing scenes. I though this was a pointless video because the audience come away with out being interested or told a story, so we chose to have a strong story within our video but also give them something to see which will interest them, unlike the Flo Riders video which just consist of product place meant which wasn't scuttle because I used it within my music but more causally.  Within our video we still used dance but only in places where it looked right to have it, I done this so that it also looked like a dance video and showed that there was a happy side to it. I also made sure our artist was singing within our video so that the audience knew that she was the singer, this is also conventional to the dance genre and I wanted to keep some aspect of the genre, it also increases artist representation to the audience. By having are artist angelic and pretty it is conventional to the dance genre which always have some sort of good looking women for men to look at within there videos. The video contains alcohol this was so that the artist could represent teens of her own age, this is also conventional to have alcohol within a dance video because the audience relation this to a good memory.  I have tried to make the video a development of a indie music video due to our artist being indie, I have done this through having filters throughout this is conventional to a indie video but not dance, I think with what I have done it looks better then most dance videos because it is more interesting. I have added visual affects so glass breaking and burning photos and the bass speaker these are all things that are commonly used in indie music videos like Ellie Goulding's 'Figure 8'. My music video follows to most of the conventions to a dance video with flashing lights a storyline and having dancing scenes, but it also breaks certain conventions with the artist being realistic and using so many filters and different editing styles, most of all having it based on a relationship with a sad ending this is very unconventional to the dance genre.

My main target audience is girl adult teens this is so they can relate and look up to my artist as an role model. I also found out that the audience wanted someone who wasn’t glamorous this is because they would rather have a realistic artist so that they can relate to them more easily. I made my artist more realistic this is unconventional to the dance genre but once again more to an indie artist. In the music video boomerang by Nicole scherzinger throughout this video she is seen to be glamorous and over dressed. I have made my artist more realist by having her not having excessive make up, I only put foundation on her so that she looked natural. Being in casual places like forest night clubs and her home makes her seem like the girl next door meaning she is more rateable to the audience and seeing her in an emotional state like crying in the bath makes her seen venerable. By having her within a bath and getting ready for a night out, it gives the audience things they can relate to because these are things they do every week, this is also affective because it is aimed at a teen adult girl audience meaning they can more easily relate to this. This is used within the video 'Now Your Gone' by Basshunter it is affective because audiences of young ages can relate to it but also they can empathises for the artist. All of those things are more everyday life things that the audience can relate too. I followed the convention of having a good looking artist this gets males attention, I have also included a night club with girls dancing sexually to also keep males attention to the video. It is conventional to have woman dancing with a video where sexually appealing clothing. This is used with the music video 'Please Don't Stop The Music' by Rihanna throughout this music video she is dancing flirtatiously keeping a males audience interested but also not making a female audience feel threatened.

I also decide to keep the storyline simple but shocking to the audience, because it is not conventional to have story lines within a dance video we thought to make it as simple as possible, in which we had a relationship where the boyfriend cheats, this can be clearly done easily. This idea of a simple music video is used within Rihanna's 'We Found Love' just from the video you can tell what the song is about so I wanted to do a video similar and as easliy to understand as this. Dance music videos do not normally include many filters and different editing styles so i wanted to break the convention. From my questionnaire I noticed that the audience wanted many different types so we have tried to include as many as possible without it looking stupid. Another reason to have broken this convention is that it is a remix of the original song. I followed the convention of using fast editing so it flows with the beat making it more pleasing to the eye this also keeps the audience more interested because they aren't seeing the same thing for too long.

My chosen genre is indie dance, this is quite a small section of the music industry this includes artist like Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen and Lana Del Rey. The song we chose is 'You, My Everything', by choosing this genre it would be more easily made professional because these videos tend not to have high budget and effects. The artist within this genre tent to tour and attend many festival which is where they'll make most money they can get paid thousands for one performance, this is also due to the target audience seem to go to festivals and its a excellent way of finding new audiences. With this I have kept the conventions of an indie dance artist so was so that it looked more realist to the album covers they had and style of video.

I then made a digipak for my artist this was hard to do because of the different aspects there to making one and how many different ways artist use these. I wanted the album cover to be simple with my artist as the front cover to the artist image can be better known, this is conventional throughout most genres to have the artist as the front cover to boost popularity.

  3)    What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Having feedback from an audience is important because it can help to show what works well and what doesn’t, I used this with the first making of my music video so that with a second attempt we could make it much better and give a stronger affect on the audience.

We chose youtube to show my sic video to an audience, I chose this because it is free, people can view them from all around the world also people can comment and give you strong feedback. It also gets viewed from people you may not know meaning it wont be biased reviews from people you know who don’t want to hurt your feelings. With over 200 views already and 1 bad review our first attempt is going very well. That one bad review did annoy me at first but then it made me want to improve my second attempt even more.

Charlotte- The video was very realistic with them holding the camera, making it seem like a real relationship. Some shots where repeated.

This comment from Charlotte made my group and I some of the footage we put in the video so that it didn’t look repetitive to the audience. The comment on how realist it looks made me feel good because it is what we wanted from this project.

Joe- The part with the tree looks amazing, her disappearing works well. Her singing isn’t always in sync with the music.

From this comment I went back and changed most of the singing part so that they look more as if she is singing the song and had to sit there for hours getting it perfect. The free scene took 20 mins of standing in the rain so I’m glad that it has a strong affect on the audience.

Ella- They seem to be a real couple, the cringe scene can scenes can seem set up at some points. The fireworks work well with all the smoke.

With Ella’s comment we tried very hard on trying to find natural things for both actors to do, but it was hard to film in places where there was good lighting and where people couldn’t get within the shot.  We are glad that they look like a real couple that was one of our aims even though they are not together in real life. The fire works took over 3 hours to film so we are glad that they look realist to the audience.

From all the comments we did what we could to make our music video better in anyway possible, these comments help so much to make a better music video all together.  If I were a music producer I would have taken the comments on broad the same way and changed what I could so that the audience was happy with what they got. The comments would have help massively if I were within the music industry because without them I may have messed up massively.

Music Video Comparison

·       Do you think you have created a successful music video why?
·       Which micro element, best shows your creativity and understanding of your music genre the most?

·       Compare your music video to a successful video, from the same genre and explain how your video is conventional. Consider the style, representation of the artist sounds, editing, mise-en-scene

I think that I have made a successful music, because to me it looks realistic and its something an audience can watch continuously without getting bored because it is interesting. It also is because it has such a catchy song people will keep it in there head for days on end. I also believe that it is successful due to the audience feed back and how they have all enjoyed it. Another reason for me to think that I have made it successful it that it still has a dance theme to it even though I tried to break the convention and make it more indie.

Throughout the music video the creativeness is there, which is shown though the different places and shots that I have used. This can be seen though the fireworks, self held camera shots and base speaker. I think this is creative because within a dance music video they only stick to the dance aspect. I saw most music dance music videos and wanted to break the convention and make it more interesting then someone dancing and too much of a simple storyline. I have done this well due to the good response from the target audience and I still haven't got bored of watching the same video. I have broken the convention of a dance video by having loads of different filters throughout.

My music video had more of a storyline then most dance music videos I'm comparing it to 'Timber' By Ke$ha and Pitbull this song done very well getting over 130million views and also being number 1 on the singles charts. Throughout this video there isn't any storyline it is set in a America country side with them dancing and drinking with locals, my video contrast with this because it has a meaning behind it with a strong storyline but also has the elements of a dance video from the fast pace and dancing within it. It is also unconventional due to the editing style, I have used different fame changes throughout while this video has only used clean cut in every change. I have stuck to the convention of having woman being flirtatious, because I believe this keeps male interest to the video. Also used alcohol but I haven't glamorised it unlike most music videos. The uses of Dr. Dre beats head phones was used a product placement so that it look more realistic like the Timber video which had been sponsored by alcohol companies.

I have made my artist seem more realistic and more approachable compared to Ke$ha in this video because she seems too glamorous and unreliable towards the audience, so once again I broke the convention.

Audience Feedback

Have audience feedback within a production is something that all companies need, in case they have done something wrong or if there is something they can change to make it much more affect for its purpose. This also helps who ever made it get better if it has constructive criticisms. We showed our video to a group of people and asked them to comment on it, we chose people of different ages so that it was biased. We chose youtube to show my sic video to an audience, I chose this because it is free, people can view them from all around the world also people can comment and give you strong feedback.
