Diversity of Music Videos

Most music videos stick to conventions but there has always been the few that are there to shock the audience  making it diverse. They could be a pop singer and do a dark video which might make there audience not want to watch it. An artist or director can make a video unique or diverse just by the editing of the video differently.

Chris Cunningham is a well known directer, he is mostly known for making diverse videos. He is British and was born in Reading. He done an expedition which consisted of beauty and horror for a gallery at the Royal academy of Art this reflects on his music videos. This is strongly shown with his music video 'Come To Daddy' made for Aphex Twins, this is one of his most famous pieces of work, his music videos are made as a piece of abstract art. This music video gives the affect of a short horror, that doesn't include contact or injury but though flash images that intimating the character and audience. This connects to social media and how T.V. affects child making the anti social and more violent, by the monster whispering 'I want your soul' making them seem as if they are mind controlling the children, because child are influential. With the monster coming out of the T.V. reflects on the affect is has on the younger audience and how it is becoming a reality. With it having such a song message it makes is diverse from an average video, with the repetition of the words though out making the audience remember it more easily. It is set within an unglamorous place which is very unconventional for a music video, by having it within a council estate making it more relatable to people who would stereotypically be listening to this music. It wasn't pleasant towards the audience making it hard to watch, giving you a strong feeling that you where in the setting, with the characters being intimidating to the audience.

This video has been made to stand out from the crowed, due to its darkness and spiritual feel to it. Madonna has chosen to work with this directer because she didn't want it to be like her other videos, she has the power to make something different because she is so famous meaning either way people will want to see it. It is normal for an artist to have something unconventional to show a deeper side to them, this gets the audience to either love it or hate it but either way gets more people talking about it meaning she will be more popular because she will be within the eye of the media. This music video is set in a desert, showing her to be isolated and alone which is unconventional.  The constant use of black throughout also doesn't attract an audiences attention, making people have to concentrate to watch it. The use of ravens is showing that she is using another side of her, this could be said that its Dyers theory of her growing as a musician, changing so that her fans dont get bored as if they are getting constantly the same thing, because this stands out from all her other music video for example vogue. Madonna is un glamorous in this music video which is very unconventional for her as this portrays that she is hurt and messed up inside.

The video was directed by Michel Gondry he is a well known french director. He is well known for making music videos that are controversial, and that are different. From this he has directed over 50 music videos to date. But Kylie Minogues video for come in to my world being one of the most well known due to the artist. This music video is not conventional to the pop culture, it based mainly on editing and how well the whole things looks. You would say that this video breaks all the boundaries because it seem quite normal to the eye but compared to a common video it doesn't have all the conventions. Within this video they expressing a every day life adding how average people do the same every day which links well with the repetitive lyrics of the song, Kylie's outfit is also very casual fitting in with the theme of doing day to day errands such as picking up the dry cleaning.

Rough Cut

We made a rough cut of our music video this was made so that we could then do improvements after but also see what the target audience though and how we could make it better. It is important to have audience feedback so that they can give us there view on how it looks and if there is anything we can change to improve the affect on them. This then will be easier to know what we can change within our final product.  We received our feedback from youtube and asking people what they thought and we also asked people who had watched it to comment on it so that we could improve it.

Charlotte- The video was very realistic with them holding the camera, making it seem like a real relationship. Some shots where repeated.

Joe- The part with the tree looks amazing, her disappearing works well. Her singing isn’t always in sync with the music.

Ella- They seem to be a real couple, the cringe scene can scenes can seem set up at some points. The fireworks work well with all the smoke.

Charlotte made us want to change some of the footage we put in the video so that it didn’t look repetitive to the audience. The comment on how realist it looks made me feel good because it is what we wanted from this project. Due to the comment Joe gave, we went back and changed most of the singing part so that they look more as if she is singing the song and had to sit there for hours getting it perfect. The free scene took 20 mins of standing in the rain so I’m glad that it has a strong affect on the audience. Because of Ella’s comment we tried very hard on trying to find natural things for both actors to do, but it was hard to film in places where there was good lighting and where people couldn’t get within the shot.  We are glad that they look like a real couple that was one of our aims even though they are not together in real life. The fire works took over 3 hours to film so we are glad that they look realist to the audience.

Group Advert

This was Jordan's attempt at doing the magazine advert, he has chosen a pink back ground because it we have aimed our target audience at teen girls and they like pink. He has then used Lilies so that

For our group advert we have decided to go with my second attempt because it looks the most professional between the both of ours. It also links in more with the themes that we have shown though the digipak and music video. I have gone for a more glamorous look for the magazine advert, this is so that it will drawn in a wider audience, this also has a strong dance theme look to it which links to the song. I have used the same font throughout which is also the same as the digipak and music video so that it all links and flows more easily together. I have used different colours of blue so that it sticks to her colour which I have given her so that when they see it they will straight away think of her. By makes the important information stand out with a bigger front and different colour this makes the audience remember these words more easily, which is what the artist and record company wants. with her showing off her body it makes the male audience more interested in her and makes girls idealise her. Once again her eyes are a main part of it with them standing out and cutting thought the darkness around her. Over all I think this is most affect because you are drawn in because she is looking at the audience making them want to read what the advert is about. I have also blurred out the background so she stand out much more . She looks flawless and it looks like she hasn't tried making the audience idealise her.

Photoshoot

It is important to carry out a Photo shoot when making a digipak and magazine advert, this is so that the artist image is shown to the audience so when they see the artist advertised somewhere else they can noticed. This is usually done a different time from the music video but also some are done while recording if they are in some nice settings.

I took images of her in the bath looking distressed in the bath, whiles being naked showing that she has nothing to hide. By doing this the audience will know straight away what the mood of the album is, but also some males maybe be interested in the album or video due the setting. I tried to find somewhere that looked expensive so that she looked a little more glamourise to the audience giving them a greater reason to want to see more of her.

With this second picture I have made her seem more natural, I done this by having her with next to no make up and hair natural with a nature setting. This together makes an innocent feel and making the audience like they can relate to her because she's realistic. I have put a filter on top of this so that she blends in with the back ground more and doesn't look like she shouldn't be there.

Digipak Relfection

This is what I have chosen to use as my digipac we look at both mine and Jordan's works and chose to use all the things that I designed this is because it had a theme going though it and look more professional.

This is Jordan's album cover, this sticks to the theme of blue and has the album name and artist name clearly on it. He has put the back ground as her a the sky making her seem more angelic also he has blurred around the edges to make it look better.
This is Jordan's attempt of a photo within the album. He has made it black and white making it look more emotional. He has also added a blur white affect around the edge making it look more dreamy.

This is the back of Jordan's album, he has used a forest with a show man to get the audience interest within the album. This also shows that the album is about love. He has used the same photo as the magazine so that people know its the same artist.
This is Jordan's CD he has used a Photo of Lily looking like a rock start showing she has a different side to her. He has her wearing all blue which goes with the colour scheme.

This is the my digipak which we chose to use because we both though that it looked better because it all matched.I have got her face as the front cover, this is so that people will know who the album is by and it they see her on other products they will want to it if they like this one. I have edited her eyes so that they are electric blue making it match the writing of her name and with the style of the digipac. I have also made her lips more red so that she is more appealing to males and seem more as beautiful by other woman. I have darkened the whole picture so that her eyes, lips and writing stands out more. She is looking away in to the distance so that the audience can view the album without feeling uncomfortable. The title 'Silhouette' is made so that the letters get darker as you go along the word which matches the meaning of it.
This photo shows the beauty of our artist making her stand out from the crowed, I have put a filter on it so that it looks darker and have edited her eyes so that they stand out much more making them the main part of the photo. By doing this it links in with the other part of my album due to the dark saturated sense. This is one of the photos I took while we was doing her photo shoot this was one of the better photos because it looks more professional compared to most of them.
With this Photo I have made every thing around her grey so that she stands out more, this also makes her seem like someone special. With the light gleaming down on her making her seem even more angelic. The diamond in the back ground has been made to stand out more so that the theme of electric blue can be seen in this photo. By having a guy in grey within the picture is relates to the song lyrics where she is madly in love with a guy while he takes her for granted looking else where for love but also making him seem like a statue that she has fallen for. The word Personified is there to reflect on the man/statue.

For the titles of the songs I have used a heaven/hell theme or angle and devil theme to it. I have used this theme so that there seems to be 2 sides to my artist and the album can fore fill both happy moods and sad moods. Again I have used black and white for both photos making them seem more professional and fit in with the theme. For this I have used different colours on the different sides of the photo, but used the same font. I haven't used featuring artist because my artist isn't well known meaning that she would have all her song done by her only until she becomes famous.
For the Cd I wanted to do something more creative but also something that stuck with the theme. After a few different things I went with broken glass. This has a blue filter over the top so that it matches the rest of the digipak. This also has a connection with the music video where she smashes a bottle, against the wall.
With the personal message from Lily I have made the colour of the font more colourful by doing this the audience will read it because it will catch there attention more easily than just having it all in black writing. By having her as the back ground it looks more original  and unique as it is actually written by the artist. I am it black and white so that it could go with the theme of the rest if the album. By having a personal message to the audience they feel closer to the artist and more appreciated.
